Malaysian brand's ingenious solution to stopping bag snatchers
Could the Handbag Dyetonator help women feel safer on our streets?
Local sportswear label Ash Be Nimble has teamed up with Ogilvy and Mather Malaysia to create a device that will help women stop bag snatchers: a coloured smoke bomb that can be clipped to your bag and activated via SMS. Once detonated, the Handbag Dyetonator releases smoke and dye all over the thief, making it easier to identify and hopefully apprehend them. It also has a GPS that allows you to track your bag's whereabouts, and a battery life of up to 5 days.
Ash Be Nimble founder Hui Matthews says the device is still in the testing stage but he hopes to make it available to buy soon.
"At this stage, we are still working on improving it and therefore it is not yet available to the public," Hui told ELLE. "The Handbag Dyetonator aims to be a deterrent to snatch thieves, more importantly, we want to start the conversation about women's safety in Malaysia and create awareness about how women are being targeted in petty crimes, causing them to feel unsafe on the streets."
To be first in line when the Handbag Dyetonator does become available, join the waiting list. Ash Be Nimble is also working with the National Council of Women's Organisations Malaysia (NCWO) on a petition demanding harsher punishments for snatch thefts.
