Sydney design and travel creative Tara Whiteman documents her travels and mouth-watering food (especially dessert!) adventures on a daily basis on her blog and Instagram @taramilktea. When it's not about food or travel, she inspires her 248,000-and-counting followers from the comfort of her own room, which is pretty much our own #bedroomgoals.

It's not hard to be intimidated by the creativity Tara shows in how she styles her room, but by following these simple steps she shared with us, you'll be well on your way to building a space you can't wait to come home to.

1. Desk lighting
"Lighting is essential in creating a space you love. If you don't have sufficient natural light, buy lighting that sets a comfortable space. Try warm ambient light as opposed to harsh lamp spotlights."

2. Bed lighting
"Sometimes I like to watch movies in bed, but I don't like to have big bright lights on at the same time. I find having a good night lighting near my bed sets a lovely, welcoming mood. I achieve this with a cute box light, or Christmas tree decor (recycle, people!). Also, this way I don't have to stub my toes in middle of the night as I'm not making the journey from my light switch to bed."

3. Organise your clothes
"Have a standalone rack as an open wardrobe. Even though I have a wardrobe full of outfits for every occasion, during differing seasons I always have the same outfits on rotation. I keep my season staples here, I also love to have it colour coordinated so getting dressed is fun!"

4. Create a library
"Use your books to decorate. I love surrounding myself with my favourite reads. I love having them handy, and when they're neatly piled, stacked and organised, my OCD is put to rest.

5. Portable is life
"A piece I rely on is my portable bed table! I love drinking warm drinks in winter and often have them beside. A good lap table or bed desk keeps everything easily handy."

6. Make it personal
"Print out your favourite memories and surround yourself with them. I love having years old photos around me with loved ones. Frame them nicely and sit them around you or hang them. You can even create a photo wall. I went overboard with this because I'm not a minimalist when it comes to creating my space!"

7. Be inspired
"Buy some beautiful prints to inspire you. Buy nice frames to match and hang them. Whether they're quotes or photography, mixing these in with your photos can really bring your space to life."

8. Have nice stationery
"I don't know if it's just me, but I go crazy in stationery stores. I love to buy and use pretty equipment! It will also add a sweet touch to your workspace."

9. Accessorise
"I try to have flowers in my room as often as possible, something about them always make my space feel warmer. Or add final touches with candles and trinkets."
