January 2017 issue editor's letter
Gwyneth Paltrow stars on the cover of ELLE Malaysia's January issue
Magazine editors are not very good at living in the moment. We're always rushing ahead with our eyes on the horizon, trying to get there before everyone else, then rushing back to our computers to tell you all about it. Factor in print deadlines that demand we work three months in advance and you can understand why we find mindfulness, well, difficult.
Most of the time, it leaves a person feeling more than a little out of touch with reality, but in January the gap narrows. As the world slows down and people turn on their out-of-office for a few days, even those of us who are working through the holidays benefit from the slowed pace. I love January, always have, because it gives me time to pause, time to reconnect with all the friends and family I've neglected throughout the year, and time to do mundane yet necessary things that get pushed back and pushed back, like getting a haircut or going to IKEA. (Don't underestimate the power that ticking a few chores off your to-do list has to make you feel good about yourself.) There are fewer events to attend, fewer calls to field and – this is a phenomenon I have honestly observed – everyone seems a little bit nicer, somehow. Probably because we're still coasting along on all those New Year resolutions to be better people.
And with Chinese New Year so early this year, who knows? Maybe the whole of January will be one big holiday? We can hope. If you are lucky enough to be jetting off somewhere, turn straight to page 38 for ELLE's edit of two essential beach holiday accessories: the dangly earring and the big bag. Or escape to ravishing Rajasthan in the season's lushest fashion in Passage to India (page 74). And even if you are staying home, Danielle Graham proves that supermarket shopping can be jawdropping, on page 86.
Personally I'm avoiding airports in favour of a little domestic road-tripping this month. I want everything to be as easy as possible, after a hectic year that culminated in our first ELLE Malaysia Style Awards. Congratulations to all our winners and especially to Khoon Hooi, who won Malaysian Designer of the Year. You'll find all the gorgeous highlights and behind-the-scenes antics next month in our February issue (there I go rushing ahead again), but until then, have a wonderful, hopeful and happy start to 2017.
